The Environmental Solutions
Words That Shook The World Competition for

The New York City Schools

Background

The National High School Public Speaking Competition, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation dedicated to finding and cultivating the next great communicators and leaders.

In January of 2009 its founder, Richard Greene, author of “Words That Shook The World: 100 Years of Unforgettable Speeches and Events”, donated his DVD entitled “The 5 Communication Secrets That Swept Obama to the Presidency” to the corporation for distribution to selected school districts, without charge, so that hundreds of thousands of young men and women could learn how they, too, could “shake the world” with their words.

The New York City Schools reviewed the DVD and, enthusiastically accepted the corporations’ offer. An internet version of the DVD and the accompanying 25 page Workbook will be distributed to every high school student attending high school in the New York City Schools.

When the students receive the free DVD and Workbook, they will also receive an invitation to participate in a very exciting school system-wide competition that combines public speaking and an opportunity to think of ways they can personally get involved and help solve one of the challenges that may threaten their own way of life as adults. .

The theme of the competition is “Environmental Solutions” and the students can win scholarships, internships and other prizes in three categories.

Four Competitions in One

The Technology Prize: To the student who effectively communicates the best technical idea to help solve our national need for alternative fuels, alternative energy or sustainable energy use, or a community based environmental project that would save energy, lower energy consumption or make the community more environmentally sustainable in any way.

The Finance/Public Policy/Eco-Activist Prize: To the student who effectively communicates the most creative financial policy, public policy and/or local, national or global "Eco-Activist" service project to address a significant environmental issue. The

"The Jason Mraz Art, Music and the Environment" Competition

As “Words That Shook The World” and, now, through the corporation, Richard Greene and his team have been conducting public speaking trainings and competitions since 2004 and have awarded well over $100,000 in scholarships. They have partnered with The National Forensics League, School Tube, The Anthony Robbins Foundation and had such notables as Rev. Joseph Lowery, Sting, Tony Robbins, Erin Brockovich, ABC’s Anne Compton, Circuit Court Judge Billy Wilkins and others serve as judges.

Schedule:

Step One:
Distribution of "The 5 Communication Secrets That
Swept Obama to The Presidency"

Distribution of DVD and Workbook to all high school teachers for subsequent
distribution to all students.

Step Two:
November 3 Training Program for Teachers

On Tuesday, November 3, 2009 hundreds of teachers attended a free training seminar conducted by Richard Greene on “The 5 Secrets” so that they could a) become better communicators themselves, b) be able to teach and support their students with the DVD and Workbook and c) learn how to support their students in the competition. Representatives from the sponsoring companies were also there to brief the teachers on some of the exciting substance of their content areas. Noah Wyle and Deidre Hall also participated.

Step Three:
November 4: Registration Begins

Beginning on November 4, New York City high school students and teachers were invited to register for the competition. Starting in December students will be asked to submit 2 – 3 minute videos, presenting their “Environmental Solutions”. These will be simple, straight into the camera videos with no more than 3 photos, graphs or included videos (of not more than 15 seconds each). The goal is to deliver a compelling, lasered message about an invention or project or idea that might, potentially, “shake the world”, or at least the New York community.

Videos will be submitted to either:
1. The Technology Competition
2. The Jason Mraz Art, Music and The Environment Competition

3. The Finance and Public Policy Competition
4. The Eating, Health and The Environment Competition

Submitted videos will be evaluated by The National Forensics League, the corporate sponsor(s) of each competition and a team of authors, academics, celebrities and other VIPs chosen by The Words That Shook The World organizers.

Step Four:
Lunch and Lunchtime Programs

With Veggie Burgers and healthy drinks being provided, for free, to all attendees, Richard, previous student competition winners, celebrities, representatives from the prize sponsoring companies and others will visit select high schools within the New York system and provide training, bring students on stage to provide one-on-one coaching and answer questions about the subject matter, presentation and competition rules.

Step Five:
Deadline for Submitting Videos - Quarter Finals Competition Begins

February 5

The top 100 videos in each competition will make it into the Quarter Finals.

Step Six:
Semi Finals Competition Begins

February 19

The top 100 videos in each competition will be narrowed down to the top 25. At this point, all of the high school students in The New York City School System will be allowed to see, and vote on, the outstanding ideas and presentations of their fellow students.
